The Brief
The Aga Khan Museum had an enviable problem: a donor community that had grown beyond what their original recognition environment could honour. Envision, who had designed the original installation, was invited back to find a way to expand the wall’s capacity without compromising the architectural sophistication of one of Toronto’s most distinctive cultural spaces.
The Work
Envision’s original design had used elegant etched glass panels, timeless, refined, and very much in keeping with the museum’s character. The challenge in returning was to introduce digital capability without creating a rupture between old and new. Envision integrated a dynamic LED display with the existing glass panels, creating a hybrid environment that adds flexibility and capacity while preserving the wall’s visual coherence. The glass atrium presented an additional technical challenge: natural light shifting throughout the day affected how the digital content appeared alongside the static panels. Envision resolved this with a custom light sensor that automatically adjusts the display’s colour balance, ensuring the two elements read as one at any time of day.
The Relationship
A continuing partnership: Envision designed the original installation, and was brought back to carry it forward as the museum’s donor community grew.
